Project details

The 2012 Geneva Mayors Forum on "Governance and Leadership: Cities, the Laboratories of the Future", will take place the 11th-13th of April. It represents an opportunity to maximize the exchanges between City Mayors and representatives of various organizations.

Leading city mayors from Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe will gather in Geneva on April 12-13, 2012 for a forum and series of workshops concentrating on the increasing importance of cities as innovators in managing global issues from climate change and growing inequalities, to migration, health and safety. Hosted by Mayor Pierre Maudet, the youngest Mayor of the City of Geneva to date, and in partnership with the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, this unique high-level event will serve to highlight the key role of cities in the international arena and will bring together city mayors who are paving the way forward in creative ways.

Cities are increasingly being recognized as laboratories of the future. They represent a tangible level of government where ideas are promoted, debated and implemented, and are spaces where global issues are tackled in innovative ways. Over half the world’s population currently live in cities, yet city mayors still have little say at the level of international debates.

This forum will bring together these issues in a two-day workshop at the Graduate Institute. Mayors from around the world, recognized as the “next generation†of leaders, will share best practices in global and city governance in panel sessions moderated by Graduate Institute faculty members. In addition, participants will discuss how communities and citizens engage in urban affairs towards collaborative innovation as well as how the city along with international organizations and the private sector are engaged in topics of increasing
complexity.

Volunteering Opportunities

ICV will provide interpreting from and to Japanese and English/French for one of the Japanese Mayors participating in the event.
