ICVolunteers Projects CalendarConvention on Anti-Personnel Mines and on their DestructionProject at a glanceDates and Place22 June 2011, Geneva, SwitzerlandOrganizersGeneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining Project detailsThe Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mine and on their Destruction entered into force on 1 March 2009. Article 5.3 of the Convention states that if a State Party believes it will be unable to destroy or ensure the destruction of all anti-personnel mines in mined areas under its jurisdiction or control within 10 years of the entry-into force of the Convention, it may submit a request for an extension of its deadline for completing the destruction of such anti-personnel mines, for a period of up to ten years. Such requests have been submitted in 2011 by the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Algeria. Representatives of the two countries will meet with a Group of Representatives of 16 States, as well as the President of the Convention, that have been mandated with developing an analysis and approach of the requests for extension of their landmine clearance deadlines. The meeting will allow the representatives of the two requesting countries to answer questions and clarify issues within their request.
